David Hockney

A pioneer of the 1960s British movement, David Hockney is one of the most celebrated and prolific artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Endlessly versatile, he has produced acrylic paintings, photo collages, full-scale opera set designs, and iPad drawings. Hockney first gained critical recognition in 1961 with semi-autobiographical paintings depicting gay relationships. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1964, a move that proved decisive: the light, architecture, and queer social life of Southern California became a defining subject. Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1972) sold at Christie's in 2018, briefly making it the most expensive painting sold at auction by a living artist. Hockney's work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the National Portrait Gallery, London. See less
