Up for sale is a stunning, original 1977 mixed-media drawing (pencil and pastel on paper) by Postwar and Contemporary American artist Douglas James Johnson (1940–1998).
This highly detailed, layered composition serves as a literary homage to the famous "Auden Group" of mid-century British writers. It features distinct figurative portrait sketches of W.H. Auden, Stephen Spender, and Christopher Isherwood, interwoven with the evocative text of Greek poet C.P. Cavafy’s famous poem, "Remember, Body..."
Provenance & Framing:
The artwork features impeccable, untouched New York gallery history fully intact on the reverse. It includes the original typewritten gallery inventory label from the historic Carlton Gallery (127 East 69th Street, NY) and the handwritten gallery inventory code "C.G. 9" on the upper frame.
The piece is housed in its original, premier, museum-grade solid wood archival frame custom-crafted by the legendary Bark Frameworks Inc. (155 Wooster Street, SoHo, NY).
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. The pastel and graphite remain crisp and vibrant. The frame is structurally sound with minor, age-appropriate wear to the wood edge that adds to its vintage character. Completely untouched backing paper and wiring; ready to hang.
