This is a set of 2 original French designs for hats that date to c1935. We purchased them in Paris. Done with pencil on calque (a fragile translucent paper) and enhanced with details in China marker. These designs feature front and rear views of both Caroline Reboux and Suzy Talbot hats. Caroline Reboux was the first milliner to add a veil to women's hats; colored ones became her specialty. Her career began in 1870 and for over fifty years she was "The Queen of the Milliners", even representing Parisian commerce at the Paris World's Fair of 1900. These 1935 designs are described in detail in English. Zoom in to see details of "Gilet", its "new" thin veil and "wine felt". While Caroline Reboux passed away in 1927, her enormously successful brand continued until the 1940s.
Suzanne Talbot worked as a milliner in Paris and opened her own shop in the early 1920s. Her clients included royalty such as the Durchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson. Her stylish hats soon defined chic to fashion conscious Parisiennes. These particular sketches were done in black and feature a velvet bow. The "Antinea" design was sent to Macy's in New York .
The drawings measure 8 x 10.25 inches in size. They come affixed to acid free paper, ready for your matting/framing. They are treasures, a piece of history for today's vintage fashion collector.
