A monumental 19th century English Georgian painted breakfront bookcase featuring a concealed drop-front secretary desk and astral glazed glass windows. The case is decorated with pale celadon-blue seafoam or duck egg-toned paint throughout. The finish has an authentically distressed and faded patina adding to its charm. The cabinet features a commanding and massive form with a projecting center section, flanking bookcase bays, molded plinth base, carved classical cornice, glazed upper doors, fitted interior shelving, lower storage drawers, and a concealed fall-front writing desk. The upper section is fitted with four glazed doors, each designed with astragal glazed bars in a geometric octagonal and X-form pattern. The glass-front doors open to painted interior shelving, providing generous display space for books, porcelain, glassware, or decorative objects. Most of the window panes retain their original subtle wavy glass. The drawers are fitted with patinated brass bails. The central lower section opens to reveal a full secretary writing compartment. The central storage door has a small hidden false-bottom secret storage compartment. The hidden door has an old paper ledger still attached to the back as seen in photos. The fall-front writing surface is fitted with brass hinges and large arched brass support stays, allowing it to function as a practical desk surface measuring approximately 46" wide and 16" deep. Behind the fall front is a fitted interior with an arrangement of small drawers, pigeonholes, open compartments, and shaped dividers. The lower section includes long central storage drawers, and flanking cupboards. The cabinet is surmounted by a classical molded cornice with carved foliate detail. The pale celadon-blue paint has been rubbed, dry-brushed, and distressed over time, revealing darker undertones and wear along the drawer edges, moldings, plinth, cornice, and door frames. An impressive and monumental English country piece ideal for a library, dining room, living room, retail, entry, or study. The large scale case disassembles into several pieces for transport and installation.
