A striking botanical citrus engraving from Giovanni Battista Ferrari’s landmark 1646 publication Hesperides sive de Malorum Aureorum Cultura et Usu Libri Quatuor, one of the most celebrated works on citrus cultivation and botanical study of the 17th century. The engraving depicts a life-sized cross-section and exterior view of a rare citrus specimen, rendered with extraordinary precision and texture. The flowing ribbon cartouche across the top bears the fruit’s scientific designation, "Limon Sponginus Liguria Verrucosus," a signature feature of Ferrari’s celebrated citrus plates.
Ferrari, a Jesuit scholar, horticultural expert, and advisor to the Papal family, compiled the work through direct observation and dissection of citrus varieties grown in Rome rather than relying solely on ancient texts. The engravings were executed by master printmakers including Johann Friedrich Greuter and Cornelis Bloemaert after designs by leading Roman artists. Art historian David Freedberg famously described the work as a watershed moment in botanical illustration, noting that “never before had the insides of citrus fruit been depicted with such care.”
