Late 19th century American salt glaze stoneware crock featuring a striking hand-painted cobalt “Bee Sting” or “Lazy 8” decoration. This substantial primitive vessel has exceptional sculptural presence, with a beautifully balanced cylindrical form, thick rolled rim, and applied lug handles.
The crock retains its original salt-glazed exterior and rich Albany slip interior, with attractive kiln speckling and authentic wear consistent with age and use. The freehand cobalt decoration is particularly expressive, with an elongated descending stinger that gives the piece strong visual impact.
Likely Pennsylvania, Ohio, or Midwestern regional stoneware, circa 1875–1900.
A wonderful example of authentic American utilitarian pottery that works beautifully in farmhouse, wabi-sabi, primitive, Americana, or modern organic interiors.
Condition:
Very good antique condition with no cracks, repairs, or hairlines observed. Minor shallow exterior scrapes and a small chip to one handle consistent with age and use. Honest wear and patina throughout.
Dimensions:
Height: 16.5 in.
Diameter: 13.125 in.
Approximate Capacity: 7–8 gallons
A highly decorative and increasingly sought-after piece of early American stoneware.
