this piece dates from the production period of étienne vilotte (1922-1945), as evidenced by the stamped mark under the base: "ciboure" above the monogram "ve".

design & aesthetics
the vase features a polychrome decoration of exceptional finesse, characteristic of the workshop's neo-greek/orientalist period. The central hand-painted frieze depicts a winged mythological creature (a bird-mermaid or sphinx), surrounded by geometric registers of interlocking triangles, chevrons, and stylized wave motifs. The brown, ochre, and matte black tones typical of ciboure stoneware lend this piece a presence that is both historical and resolutely modern.
