The series presents a fascinating survey of northern indigenous communities and explorers’ encounters with remote cultures during the great age of geographic discovery and ethnographic publishing. The collection includes depictions of Samojeeds (Samoyedic peoples of northern Siberia), Laplanders (Sámi people), Aïno of Kurilier (Ainu people of the Kuril Islands), Kamtschadalen (Kamchadal people), a Kamtschadalsche vrouw (Kamchadal woman), Korjake (Koryak people), a Tschuktschen family (Chukchi family), and both male and female Eskimo figures from the Arctic regions. Each figure is shown in traditional attire rendered with remarkable attention to clothing, fur garments, hunting tools, footwear, bows, sled equipment, and regional costume details adapted to the harsh northern climate. Produced during the 19th century when European interest in ethnography, polar exploration, and the peoples of remote regions was rapidly growing, these prints combine documentary curiosity with the refined decorative qualities of hand-colored lithography. The compositions retain a strong visual elegance, with generous margins and softly colored backgrounds allowing the figures to stand prominently against the warm antique paper tone. Particularly striking are the dynamic Samojeed hunter with bow and skis, the richly dressed Ainu fisherman from the Kuril Islands, the tattooed Chukchi family group, and the delicately rendered Eskimo figures dressed in traditional fur garments. Together the prints form a compelling decorative ensemble and an important visual record of indigenous cultures from the circumpolar north. The soft original hand coloring and harmonious palette make the group exceptionally suitable for display as a complete wall arrangement. Hung together in a grid formation, the prints create a refined museum-like presentation ideal for libraries, studies, mountain lodges, ski chalets, coastal interiors, travel-inspired spaces, or collectors of exploration and ethnographic material. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The pieces are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be on scale with the original. Condition report: Overall in good antique condition with age-related toning, occasional foxing, and minor edge wear consistent with age. Some sheets show light marginal creasing or small handling marks. Colors remain fresh and attractive throughout the set. Several prints retain large original margins. Framing tips: These prints display beautifully in dark walnut, black lacquer, or lightly gilt frames paired with wide ivory or oatmeal mats. Their cool northern palette and ethnographic subject matter make them particularly suitable for mountain interiors, libraries, studies, Scandinavian-inspired rooms, exploration-themed collections, or curated gallery walls. Displaying the set in three horizontal rows of three creates an especially elegant and balanced presentation. Technique: Hand-colored lithographs Maker: European School, 19th century See less
