Produced during the great age of European exploration and anthropological publishing, these prints combine documentary interest with highly decorative mid-19th century lithographic artistry. The set presents a diverse range of tribal figures, ceremonial costumes, regional dress, and ethnographic portraits from across the Americas. The images were intended to educate European audiences about the peoples and cultures of the world, reflecting the growing 19th-century fascination with ethnography, travel literature, and anthropology. The ten prints included in this set are: 1. “Opperhoofd der Vos Indianen” — Chief of the Fox (Meskwaki) Indians, historically living in the Great Lakes region and present-day Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois, USA. 2. “Groep van Raven-Indianen” — Group of Raven Indians, referring to Indigenous peoples associated with the Rocky Mountain and Plains regions of North America. Notably, this sheet is landscape-oriented, unlike the other nine portrait-format prints. 3. “Een Danser der Californische Indianen” — A ceremonial dancer of the Indigenous peoples of California, western United States. 4. “Indiaansche Vrouw van Jalappa” — Indigenous woman from Jalapa (Xalapa), Veracruz, Mexico. 5. “Indiaansche Vrouw van Puebla” — Indigenous woman from Puebla, central Mexico. 6. “Indiaan van Puebla” — Indigenous man from Puebla, Mexico, shown wearing a richly decorated traditional serape. 7. “Indiaansche Vrouw van Quito” — Indigenous woman from Quito, Ecuador, carrying a child in traditional Andean fashion. 8. “Indiaansche Vrouw van Pampas” — Indigenous woman of the Pampas region of Argentina and Uruguay in South America. 9. “Maxurunas” — Indigenous Maxuruna (Matsés-related) people of the Amazon rainforest region, historically associated with western Brazil and Peru. 10. “Botocudos” — Portrait studies of the Botocudo peoples of eastern Brazil, noted in early ethnographic literature for their traditional lip and ear ornaments. The hand coloring remains fresh and attractive throughout, with especially strong reds, blues, yellows, and earth tones. Together, the prints form an exceptional decorative ensemble with strong visual coherence and considerable wall impact. Presented as a gallery wall, the set works beautifully in dark walnut, black lacquer, or lightly gilt museum frames with wide ivory mats, particularly within libraries, studies, Southwestern interiors, ethnographic collections, or refined eclectic spaces. Condition report: Overall condition is good for works of this age, with age-related toning, occasional foxing, and minor edge wear or handling marks as expected. Some sheets show small marginal imperfections and light staining. The landscape-oriented “Raven-Indianen” print differs in format from the remaining portrait-oriented sheets. The prints retain wide original margins and display very attractively. The prints are original antique lithographs, not reproductions. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The pieces are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
