Stool designed by Jan de Jong made for a private home in Oirschot, Netherlands 1970. This rare and highly collectible stool is an exceptional example of the Bossche School design philosophy, created by Dutch architect Jan de Jong, the most devoted and brilliant disciple of Dom Hans van der Laan. Rooted in architectural purity and spiritual order, this piece is far more than utilitarian furniture. It is a three-dimensional embodiment of proportion, space, and form.
Designed in the early 1970s as a private commission for a residence in Oirschot and made by a local workshop, this stool adheres strictly to the principles of het plastische getal (the plastic number), a proportional system developed by Dom Hans van der Laan to guide harmonious spatial relationships. De Jong, who worked closely with Van der Laan and was integral to the evolution of the Bossche School, not only interpreted these principles but gave them expressive power through built form.
Constructed from solid pine planks, the stool features exposed carpentry and prominent nails, an intentional and defining feature of Bossche School furniture. Rather than hiding the joinery, the visible nails celebrate it, demanding a precision and discipline in construction that reflects the spiritual austerity of the movement. The inner framework is concealed, allowing the outer skin of the piece to remain visually honest and architecturally coherent. The stool was repainted some years ago in its original, muted tone, and now carries a subtle patina that speaks to its age and authenticity. Its quiet presence and architectural rigor make it a compelling addition to any collection focused on radical design, post-war architecture, or the lineage of sacred geometry in modern aesthetics. An exceedingly good opportunity to acquire a nice piece of the most intellectually rigorous design movements of the 20th century. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
issues arising from misattribution
