Four-drawer commode from the late Gründerzeit period, stylistically attributable to Louis XVI historicism, datable to around 1880–1895. The combination of geometric parquet veneer, fluted pilasters, and the original red marble top results in a formally balanced and clearly structured composition.
Historical context:
This commode belongs to the key storage furniture pieces of 19th-century bourgeois interiors. During the Historicism period, classical design languages—particularly Louis XVI—were systematically revived in German and French-influenced furniture production and reinterpreted for an emerging middle class. Such commodes were used in bedrooms and living rooms of affluent households for the orderly storage of linen, clothing, and household goods. The craftsmanship—visible in the elaborate veneer work, fluted architectural details, and original marble top—reflects the design ambitions of an era that combined representation with bourgeois functionality.
Features:
Geometrically executed parquet veneer on the drawer fronts with herringbone and central diamond motifs in walnut. Original red marble top with white veining, complete and preserved without cracks.
Design:
Stylistically attributed to Louis XVI historicism, produced in the German or French-influenced sphere around 1880–1895. The design follows classical principles of order: fluted pilasters frame the sides of the carcass, diamond corner blocks emphasize structural axes, and a fluted plinth frieze closes the lower section. Turned toupie feet and ornamental brass key escutcheons with floral keys provide decorative accents without disturbing the architectural structure. The geometric parquet veneer on the drawer fronts is characteristic of high-quality Gründerzeit furniture influenced by French design.
Function:
Originally: storage of linen, clothing, and household items in bourgeois bedrooms and living spaces.
Today: usable as a sideboard, credenza, or storage piece in living rooms, bedrooms, or entryways.
