A two-door sideboard in the french louis xvi style, crafted as a high-quality reproduction in solid wood with gilded bronze fittings and a white marble top. The body and fittings adhere strictly to the neoclassical design principles of the original: clearly structured horizontals, symmetrical arrangement of ornamentation, and a calmly proportioned structure on fluted tapered legs.
historical context: the louis xvi style developed in france during the last third of the 18th century as a formal departure from rococo and drew inspiration from ancient greek and roman models. The low, two-door buffet—referred to as a "meuble bas" in french inventory terminology—was a standard feature of the formal furnishings in the dining and reception rooms of upper-middle-class and aristocratic homes. The combination of a wooden body, marble top, and bronze decorative fittings was a defining characteristic of french cabinetmaking during this period and has been widely reproduced since the 19th century.
features:
a continuous egg-and-dart frieze in gilded bronze runs along the frame below the marble top – a characteristic ornamental motif of the louis xvi style with antique origins. Door panels in mirrored diagonal veneer (herringbone pattern), framed by finely profiled bronze moldings. Design style: louis xvi, reproduction in historical style.
design principles: strict symmetry, tectonic articulation, avoidance of curved lines in favor of straight contours. Corner pilasters as fluted half-columns with figurative bronze pendants (floral and fruit motifs). Conical, fluted legs, finished with gilded bronze cornices and sabots. Escutcheons with a ribbon motif, rosettes as door corner fittings – all bronze parts cast and chased.
function: formerly: storage of tableware, linens, or silverware in the dining room or drawing room. Today: sideboard, credenza, or representative storage unit in living rooms, dining rooms, or entryways.
dimensions: h 88 × w 135 × d 50 cm. Material and condition: solid wood with real wood veneer (herringbone pattern, light fruitwood), gilded bronze fittings, white marble top. As new, unused, without any signs of wear.
