Jean-gabriel domergue (1889-1962) was a french painter and engraver, famous for his portraits of elegant women—or rather, for the idealized feminine figure he developed over time, instantly recognizable and marked by the art deco aesthetic. A second cousin of toulouse-lautrec, he studied at the école des beaux-arts in paris and exhibited at the salon des artistes français from 1906 onward, where he received several awards, including the second grand prix de rome in 1913. In 1939, domergue created the now-iconic poster for the first cannes film festival, which was ultimately canceled, depicting a woman applauding alongside a man in formal attire. He was elected to the institut de france in 1950 and became curator of the jacquemart-andré museum, where he organized major exhibitions that helped solidify his position as a leading figure in the french art scene. “portrait of an elegant woman” mixed technique on bistre paper, signed and dated on the right, 1919 dimensions: h: 30 cm; l: 24 cm (at sight, without frame) h: 63 cm; l: 54 cm (with frame) jean-gabriel domergue (1889–1962) was a distinguished french painter and engraver, best known for his portraits of elegant women - or, more precisely, for a feminine ideal he refined throughout his career, instantly recognizable and imbued with the spirit of art deco.
