This piece embodies the abstraction and spiritual symbolism characteristic of traditional West African ceremonial carving. Hand-carved from wood with a deeply weathered dark patina, the mask features an elongated projecting muzzle, narrow vertical eye slits, and a shield-like facial plane that evokes the form of the monkey, an animal associated in Dogon belief with the untamed forces of the bush, unpredictability, intelligence, and the tension between order and chaos. Masks of this type were traditionally worn during ritual dances, funerary ceremonies, and initiation rites, where masked performers acted as intermediaries between the human and spiritual worlds.
