A lightweight ceramic serving dish with matching lid adorned with intricate and colorful transfers of chrysanthemums and ships sailing off to distant lands. The design is very Aesthetic Movement
The handles on both sides of the body and the lid handle are decorated with matching multicolor transfers. The body rests on four raised molded feet. The base and interior are glazed. The body glaze is a cream or ivory color.
There are numerous marks impressed into the clay on the base and under the lid. The lid has BROWNFIELD AND IVORY with a diamond and IV at its top. There is also the number 9 and the number 1 above an 82. The base has similar marks. The base again has BROWNFIELD and IVORY but with a 1 over the number 83. There is also a circle next to the numbers, as well as an indistinct diamond shape.
MEASUREMENTS
10 ¾” (27.3 cm) wide x 9 ½” (24.1 cm) diameter x 4 ¾” (12.1 cm) tall. Weighs 2 lbs 15.7 oz (1350 g)
CONDITION
There is a small chip on one foot and a larger chip under the lid rim. The chip on the lid show very little from the top. Otherwise, there are no breaks or cracks. There is wear on the surfaces including the base and lid underside. There is some crazing, mainly on the underside of the lid. The interior has some staining. There are flaws to the transfers and minor manufacture flaws throughout, but the dish is still colorful and intact.
I love Aesthetic Movement design with its rich intricacy. This is the over-the-top Victorian that I love.
