Grace Spongberg (American, 1906-1992) "Lake Maggiore" oil pastel on paper, titled and estate stamp on reverse. The Isola dei Pescatori or Fisherman's Island is part of northern Italy.
A life-long Chicagoan, Spongberg trained at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with Louis Rittman (1889-1963) and Albert Krehbiel (1873-1945). She exhibited many places including the AIC, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Cincinnati Art Museum, Joslyn Art Museum (Omaha, NE), Renaissance Society (Chicago), Art Student's League, Riverside Museum (NYC), Chicago Society of Artists (where she was a member), and the Swedish-American Exhibition where she was awarded the purchase prize in 1936 for "Washington Square, Chicago." She also exhibited ceramics at the Benedict Gallery at Hull House in 1951 with her fellow artist and roommate Hatti Hayes.
A WPA mural, one of two she completed, survives and was restored at Bennett Elementary School on South Prairie Ave.
Collections: Smart Museum at the University of Chicago, Block Museum at Northwestern University and Smaland Museum (Sweden).
