An elegant and highly romantic gilt bronze figural sculpture signed by the celebrated French sculptor Paul Dubois, depicting a graceful young woman captured mid-motion with extraordinary refinement and theatrical charm. Standing upon an integral naturalistic base, the figure is portrayed in richly detailed period costume, holding a delicate fan aloft while her flowing garments and poised stance create a remarkable sense of movement and sophistication. The sculpture beautifully embodies the spirit of late 19th-century French academic sculpture, where realism, emotion, and decorative elegance were brought together with masterful technical precision.
The figure’s costume is exquisitely rendered, displaying finely chased folds, ribbon detailing, floral accents, and delicate textures throughout the bodice and skirt. Her expressive facial features, curly coiffure, and confident posture lend the piece a lively personality that recalls the fashionable elegance of Belle Époque Paris. The warm gilt bronze surface possesses a rich and luminous patina, highlighting the exceptional modeling and craftsmanship throughout the composition.
Paul Dubois (1829–1905) was one of the most important French sculptors and painters of the 19th century, widely admired for combining Renaissance-inspired refinement with the realism and technical mastery associated with the French Academic tradition. Born in Nogent-sur-Seine, France, Dubois studied law before dedicating himself fully to sculpture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He became internationally celebrated for his portrait busts, historical figures, and idealized female forms, often blending classical restraint with emotional sensitivity.
Dubois exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and achieved enormous acclaim during his lifetime, eventually becoming Director of the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts. His works can today be found in major museum collections including the Musée d’Orsay and the Louvre. Sculptures by Dubois are especially prized for their elegance, anatomical precision, and refined surface treatments, qualities beautifully demonstrated in this captivating bronze figure.
A timeless and highly decorative work, this sculpture would make an exceptional addition to a sophisticated interior, grand library, or important collection of fine French bronzes.
