This charming 1960 The Bookshelf for Boys and Girls collection by The University Society includes ten richly illustrated hardcover volumes along with the accompanying Parents’ Guide index volume. Bound in beautifully saturated red covers with gold lettering, the set has a wonderfully nostalgic mid-century presence that looks equally at home styled on a bookshelf, library table, or in a children’s room.
The volumes cover a wide range of subjects including fairy tales, stories and songs from around the world, nature and science, art and music, famous people, and classic literature. The books are filled with colorful illustrations and period artwork throughout, with all covers (except the guide) featuring particularly beautiful full-page mounted illustrations.
One of my favorite details is the inclusion of The Parents’ Guide volume, which adds to the wonderfully nostalgic mid-century family library feel of the set. Together, the books feel both educational and deeply decorative — a charming snapshot of how children’s learning and storytelling were presented in the 1960s.
A beautiful decorative and usable set for traditional, grandmillennial, eclectic, cottage, or vintage-inspired interiors.
