This Georgian period desk features intricate carvings on the four drawer fronts and the central fall front. This style was originally produced throughout the 1800s in both England and Scotland. The most decorative and prominent feature of this style is the "Green Man" mythical motif noted on the four drawer fronts The Green Man motif is an ancient architectural and artistic symbol depicting a human face emerging from leaves and vines. He symbolizes the cycle of spring and revival after winter. The front slant drops forward to provide a writing surface and rests on pull-out wooden supports on both sides. The interior contains pigeonholes and drawers for storage.
The desk is both a chest of drawers and a workspace so affords flexibility of use. It can be an immediate statement piece for any room and can also be utilized to display other striking pieces or flowers.
