A rare and highly decorative Colonial Style chest of drawers produced by Bodafors in Sweden during the 1890s. Known as Model No. 555, this exceptional piece reflects the fascination with exotic influences that emerged in Scandinavian interiors at the end of the 19th century. Meticulously crafted with woven straw and bamboo-form detailing throughout, the chest possesses remarkable texture, warmth, and visual depth. The finely executed drawer fronts, cylindrical pulls, and original escutcheons create a sophisticated balance between rustic craftsmanship and refined decorative design. Raised on turned feet with clean architectural proportions, the piece has a striking yet understated presence. What makes this example especially desirable is the extraordinary state of preservation of its original materials. The woven surfaces, bamboo-style trim, hardware, and finish all appear authentic to the period and have aged beautifully over more than a century. The chest retains a rich natural patina and tonal variation that can only be achieved through genuine age and careful preservation. The original craftsmanship remains clearly visible in every detail.
Presented in very good antique condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use. The woven straw cladding remains remarkably intact with few superficial signs of wear, the drawers function well, and the original finish has been preserved rather than over-restored, maintaining the integrity and historical authenticity collectors seek. An uncommon and highly characterful Swedish antique that works equally well in Scandinavian, organic modern, or eclectic interiors. A rare surviving example from Bodafors with exceptional authenticity and timeless appeal. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
issues arising from misattribution
