Produced circa 1749 by the European School, these engravings belong to the highly collectible tradition of European costume books that documented the fashions and customs of earlier centuries and foreign nations. Such works were widely admired during the Enlightenment period for both their educational value and decorative sophistication. The original hand-coloring remains especially attractive, with delicate tones of pale blue, sage green, ivory, rose, and soft gold lending the compositions a refined and harmonious appearance. The first engraving portrays a Roman lady in ceremonial full dress, adorned with pearls, jeweled ornaments, and flowing drapery that reflects the luxurious courtly styles of late 16th-century Italy. The second depicts a noble Roman matron in profile, wearing a long flowing gown and translucent veil that evoke the dignity and classical grace associated with Renaissance Roman society. Together, the prints create a beautifully balanced pendant pair, unified by their elegant compositions, soft color palette, and shared historical setting. The generous margins surrounding the figures provide an unusually refined presentation and enhance the delicate engraved detail. Framed together, the engravings make an exceptional decorative ensemble for libraries, dressing rooms, hallways, or sophisticated classical interiors. Their graceful proportions and muted coloration also lend themselves particularly well to modern museum-style framing. Condition: Good condition overall with age-related toning, occasional scattered spotting, and light edge wear consistent with age. Wide margins preserved throughout. Original hand-coloring remains fresh and attractive. Framing tips: Particularly effective framed together in matching dark walnut, ebonized, or muted gilt frames with wide ivory mats. Their soft pastel tones and elegant Renaissance subject matter suit both traditional and contemporary interiors. Note: These prints are original antique engravings, not reproductions. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The pieces are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
