Titled “Habit of the Duke of Venice, in 1581” and “Habit of the Dutchess of Venice, in 1581,” the engravings present an elegant pendant set celebrating the grandeur, pageantry, and aristocratic sophistication of the Venetian Republic during its golden age. Produced circa 1749 by the European School, these engravings belong to the celebrated European tradition of historical costume studies that documented the fashions and customs of different nations and periods. Such works were highly admired during the Enlightenment for both their ethnographic interest and decorative beauty. The original hand-coloring remains especially vivid and attractive, with rich crimson, gold, ivory, and silver-grey tones creating a luxurious visual effect. The Duke of Venice is portrayed in flowing ceremonial robes with a richly patterned crimson mantle and distinctive ducal headpiece, embodying the solemn dignity associated with the Venetian Doge. His counterpart, the Duchess of Venice, appears in sumptuous Renaissance court dress adorned with fur trim, jewels, lace, and elaborate textiles, reflecting the opulence and refinement of Venetian noble society during the late 16th century. Together, the engravings form a beautifully balanced decorative pair. The strong visual dialogue between the male and female figures, combined with the matching coloration and shared Venetian subject matter, gives the set exceptional interior design appeal. Their elegant compositions, surrounded by generous blank margins, create a remarkably modern presentation despite their 18th-century origin. Framed together, these engravings display beautifully in libraries, studies, hallways, dressing rooms, or sophisticated classical interiors. They are particularly attractive for collectors interested in Renaissance costume, Venetian history, or decorative European engravings. Condition: Good condition overall with age-related toning, scattered minor spotting, and light edge wear consistent with age. Wide margins preserved throughout. Original hand-coloring remains fresh and attractive. Framing tips: Particularly effective framed together in matching dark walnut, ebonized, or muted gilt frames with wide ivory mats. Their rich crimson tones and ceremonial subject matter lend themselves especially well to museum-style presentation. Note: These prints are original antique engravings, not reproductions. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The pieces are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
