Produced circa 1835 under the direction of the noted French natural history illustrator Edmond Guérin, with drawings by Auguste Duméril, these plates are superb examples of early 19th-century zoological illustration combining scientific observation with decorative elegance. The first engraving, titled “Pierides,” presents several striking tropical butterflies arranged against a romanticized exotic landscape populated with palms and lush vegetation. Species including Callidryade Eubule, Iphias Glaucippe, and Terias du Mexique are illustrated with remarkable precision and vibrant hand-coloring. The composition also includes a caterpillar and chrysalis study attached to flowering branches, emphasizing the full life cycle of the species. The second plate focuses on sphinx moths and botanical specimens. A dramatic striped sphinx moth with pink, cream, and black coloration hovers above finely engraved foliage, while a vividly patterned caterpillar clings to pale blue-green leaves below. The integration of entomology and botany reflects the scientific ambitions of French natural history publishing during the Restoration and early Victorian period, when publishers sought to present species within their ecological environment rather than as isolated specimens. Both engravings display the refined craftsmanship typical of high-quality Parisian natural history works of the 1830s. The hand-coloring remains luminous and carefully balanced, particularly in the butterfly wings, moth markings, and botanical elements. The spacious layouts and generous margins give the pair a remarkably elegant and modern appearance, making them highly suitable for contemporary interiors as well as traditional cabinet-of-curiosity displays. Note: These prints are original antique engravings, not reproductions. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The pieces are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. These engravings are especially attractive as a matching decorative set. Together they create a harmonious composition of insects, plants, and tropical scenery that works beautifully in libraries, studies, conservatories, galleries, or refined natural history interiors. Condition: Good antique condition overall, with age-related toning, scattered foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with age. Colors remain fresh and attractive. Please study the images carefully. Framing tip: Particularly effective framed together in matching dark walnut, black lacquer, or gilt frames with wide cream or ivory mats. The pair works exceptionally well as a diptych or within a larger salon-style arrangement of botanical and natural history prints.
