Published in the influential travel work Sandys Travels in 1673, the engraving captures the fascination that the Ottoman capital held for European audiences during the early modern period. The composition depicts the imperial skyline of Constantinople stretching along the Bosphorus, dominated by the monumental silhouette of Hagia Sophia (“Sancta Sophia”) and the extensive grounds of the Sultan’s Seraglio, or Topkapı Palace.
