Published in the influential travel work Sandys Travels in 1673, the engraving captures the fascination that the Ottoman capital held for European audiences during the early modern period. The composition depicts the imperial skyline of Constantinople stretching along the Bosphorus, dominated by the monumental silhouette of Hagia Sophia (“Sancta Sophia”) and the extensive grounds of the Sultan’s Seraglio, or Topkapı Palace. Numerous ships and sailing vessels animate the foreground waters, emphasizing the city’s role as one of the great maritime crossroads between Europe and Asia. George Sandys’ travel accounts became among the most widely read English s of the Eastern Mediterranean and Ottoman Empire during the 17th century. The engravings accompanying these editions introduced European readers to exotic cities, monuments, and cultures that many would never personally encounter. Panorama views such as this were especially prized for their ability to convey both the grandeur and strategic importance of Constantinople, then the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The engraving possesses considerable decorative charm through its elongated horizontal format and delicate line work. The restrained monochrome aesthetic gives the work an elegant architectural quality, while the identifiable landmarks make it particularly appealing to collectors of Ottoman history, Istanbul imagery, early travel literature, maritime scenes, and 17th-century topographical prints. Its broad panoramic composition also makes it exceptionally suitable for framing above desks, consoles, or within grouped displays of historical city views. Special note: This is an original 17th-century copper engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale with the original. Condition report: Overall in fair to good antique condition considering age, with visible age-related toning, fold lines, marginal wear, small losses, and scattered staining consistent with 17th-century travel-book engravings. Some ink offsetting and handling wear visible. The engraved image itself remains attractive and clearly legible. Please study the image carefully. Framing tips: This engraving displays beautifully in dark walnut, ebonized, or Ottoman-inspired gilt frames paired with wide ivory mats. Its panoramic format and historical subject make it especially suitable for libraries, studies, travel-themed interiors, or collections focused on the Ottoman Empire and early topographical views.
