The imposing domed building dominates the composition, showcasing the elegant neoclassical architecture of the Massachusetts State House, originally designed by celebrated architect Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1798. Located atop Beacon Hill overlooking the city of Boston, the building became one of the defining architectural symbols of New England and the early United States. Meyer’s engraving captures the monumentality and civic grandeur of the structure during the mid-19th century, before the dense urban development that later surrounded the site. The engraving was issued in Die Fünf Welttheile dargestellt in Bild & Wort by the Bibliographischen Institut in Hildburghausen, Germany. The Meyer publishing firm became internationally famous through Meyer’s Universum, one of the most ambitious illustrated geographical and topographical series of the 19th century. Joseph Meyer greatly admired the United States and later established an American branch through his son Hermann Meyer in New York. Their engravings remain highly sought after today for their documentary value, fine steel engraving technique, and relative scarcity compared to more commonly encountered American and English views. This view is especially desirable for collectors of Boston history, Massachusetts historical views, early American architecture, political Americana, and New England topography. The refined architectural rendering and dramatic tonal engraving create an image that is both historically important and highly decorative. Important geographical and historical references connected to this engraving include Boston, Massachusetts State House, Beacon Hill, Charles Bulfinch, Boston Common, New England, Massachusetts Bay, Faneuil Hall, Beacon Street, Tremont Street, Cambridge, Harvard University, Freedom Trail, and early American neoclassical architecture. Meyer engravings of important American civic landmarks are considerably scarcer than many contemporary English and French steel engravings of the same period. This example offers an especially elegant European interpretation of one of America’s most famous governmental buildings. Condition: Good to very good condition overall, with mild age toning, scattered spotting, and light discoloration near the margins consistent with age. Strong impression with full margins preserved. Framing tips: This engraving displays beautifully in dark walnut, black lacquer, or lightly gilt frames paired with wide ivory or cream mats. Its architectural elegance and monochrome palette make it particularly suitable for libraries, offices, academic interiors, New England homes, or sophisticated gallery walls. Special note: This is an original antique print, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale with the original.
