Titled “Habit of a Gentleman of Hungary, in 1700” and “Habit of a Lady of Hungary, in 1700,” the prints offer a fascinating glimpse into aristocratic Hungarian fashion during the late Baroque period, combining Central European court elegance with distinctive regional costume traditions. Produced circa 1749 by the European School, these engravings belong to the celebrated European tradition of costume books that documented the dress and customs of different nations and social classes. Such works were highly prized during the Enlightenment period for their ethnographic interest, decorative appeal, and educational value. The figures are delicately engraved and enhanced with original hand-coloring in soft tones of blue, rose, green, ochre, and grey, giving the compositions a refined and graceful appearance. The gentleman is shown in a fitted tunic with sash, fur-lined mantle, and tall boots, holding his fur cap and cane in a poised aristocratic stance. His attire reflects the martial and noble traditions associated with Hungarian dress during the Habsburg era. The female figure wears a richly ornamented gown with embroidered detailing, broad decorative skirt bands, and fur-trimmed shoulders, illustrating the elaborate textile culture and courtly elegance of Hungarian noble society. The restrained compositions, with each figure placed centrally within wide margins, create a remarkably modern and balanced visual effect. Framed together, the engravings form a highly decorative pendant set suitable for libraries, hallways, studies, or sophisticated traditional interiors. Their matching format and harmonious coloring make them especially attractive as a pair. Condition: Good condition overall with age-related toning, occasional scattered spotting, and light edge wear consistent with age. Wide margins preserved. Original hand-coloring remains fresh and attractive. Framing tips: Particularly attractive framed together in matching dark walnut, ebonized, or muted gilt frames with wide ivory mats. Their elegant proportions lend themselves beautifully to a refined museum-style presentation. Note: These prints are original antique engravings, not reproductions. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The pieces are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
