Guérin, 1835 This attractive pair of antique French natural history engravings depicts exotic butterflies, caterpillars, chrysalises, and botanical studies rendered in delicate hand-color. Produced circa 1835 under the direction of the noted French zoological illustrator Edmond Guérin (“E. Guérin dir.”), these elegant plates reflect the golden age of French natural history publishing, when scientific illustration was elevated into an art form of remarkable beauty and refinement. The first engraving presents several dramatic tropical butterflies arranged above lush aquatic foliage and a romanticized landscape vignette. The composition includes a spectacular black butterfly with vivid red spotting, a finely patterned pale butterfly with colorful eye-like wing markings, and a long-tailed green-and-black species hovering above delicate flowers. The arrangement combines entomological precision with decorative balance, creating a composition that feels both scientific and highly artistic. The second engraving focuses on “Vanesses,” or brush-footed butterflies, alongside their caterpillars and chrysalis stages. A striking peacock butterfly with vivid eye-spots appears beside a dark butterfly accented with crimson-red bands. The surrounding botanical elements and detailed studies of larvae and pupae emphasize the full life cycle of the insects, reflecting the educational aims of 19th-century zoological publications. The subtle landscape background further enhances the romantic natural history aesthetic characteristic of French engravings of this period. Both engravings were carefully hand-colored at the time of publication, with luminous tones and finely engraved detail throughout. The spacious compositions, elegant typography, and harmonious integration of insects and plants make the pair particularly decorative and suitable for display in both traditional and contemporary interiors. These prints would work beautifully in a study, library, conservatory, or cabinet-of-curiosity style interior. As a matching pair, they create a refined and visually engaging natural history display with strong decorative appeal. Condition: Good antique condition overall, with age-related toning, scattered foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with age. Colors remain fresh and attractive. Please study the images carefully. Framing tip: Particularly effective framed together in matching dark walnut, black lacquer, or gilt frames with wide cream or ivory mats. The pair also works beautifully within a larger salon-style arrangement of botanical and entomological prints. Note: These prints are original antique engravings, not reproductions. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The pieces are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
