Etched by H. Wallis and published in London by Thomas Fry around 1836, the prints originate from the celebrated humorous series The Sketches of Seymour, one of the defining works of Regency and early Victorian comic illustration. Each engraving presents a comic vignette rendered with Seymour’s distinctive talent for exaggerated gesture, expressive faces, and keen social observation. The first scene humorously depicts an ill-fitting tailored coat, with the unfortunate wearer proudly twisting himself around while a woman attempts adjustments, accompanied by the caption: “How does it fit behind?” The exaggerated posture and strained elegance mock the vanity and pretensions of fashionable urban society. The second print shows a weary traveler trudging through heavy rain after apparently taking the wrong road. with umbrella, bundle, and walking stick in hand, the forlorn figure embodies the comic frustrations of 19th-century travel and provincial misadventure. Seymour’s ability to transform mundane inconvenience into theatrical comedy is particularly evident here. The third engraving portrays two gossiping women engaged in neighborhood scandal over a garden wall, humorously illustrating the chaos caused by rumor and misunderstanding. This scene reflects Seymour’s enduring fascination with everyday social interactions and the comic tensions of domestic Victorian life. Robert Seymour remains one of Britain’s most influential comic illustrators and is closely associated with the early development of The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens. His engravings bridge the worlds of Georgian caricature and Victorian illustrated humor, making them highly collectible examples of British satirical printmaking. Displayed together, these prints create a wonderfully cohesive decorative ensemble full of narrative charm and period character. They are especially suitable for library interiors, English country-house settings, studies, or eclectic modern spaces seeking authentic 19th-century humor. Condition: Good antique condition overall, with age-related toning, occasional foxing, and minor handling wear. Wide margins preserved. Framing tips: These prints display beautifully in matching dark walnut, black lacquer, or traditional gilt frames with wide ivory mats. Grouped vertically or salon-style, they create an elegant and highly decorative Victorian conversation set. Technique: Original etched engravings Maker: Robert Seymour & H.
