Published by the renowned German publishing house of Joseph Meyer and Hermann Meyer around 1850, the engraving presents a remarkably early and picturesque image of Brooklyn before its later transformation into part of the modern metropolis of New York City. The composition looks down a rural road toward the growing settlement below, with houses, church spires, carts, and figures animated throughout the landscape. In the distance, the waters of New York Harbor and surrounding shoreline create a broad and luminous backdrop. The scene beautifully captures the transitional character of Brooklyn during the mid-19th century, when former agricultural land and elevated ridges overlooking the harbor were gradually developing into urban neighborhoods. This engraving was issued in Die Fünf Welttheile dargestellt in Bild & Wort by the Bibliographischen Institut in Hildburghausen, Germany. The publishing firm became internationally known through Meyer’s Universum, one of the most ambitious illustrated geographical and topographical series of the 19th century. Joseph Meyer admired the United States and later established an American branch through his son Hermann Meyer in New York. Their engravings remain highly collectible today for their combination of documentary value, refined engraving quality, and relative scarcity. Gowanus Heights holds particular historical importance within Brooklyn history and the broader development of New York City. The area is associated with early Brooklyn settlement, harbor trade, and the landscapes surrounding the famous Gowanus Creek and Gowanus Bay. The engraving also evokes the era shortly after the Battle of Long Island during the American Revolutionary War, which took place in the broader Brooklyn Heights and Gowanus region. Important geographical and historical references connected to this engraving include Brooklyn, Gowanus Heights, Gowanus Bay, Gowanus Creek, New York Harbor, Manhattan, Long Island, Brooklyn Heights, Red Hook, Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Atlantic Avenue, Wallabout Bay, East River, and the early development of New York City. The engraving is especially desirable for collectors of New York history, Brooklyn views, Americana, urban topography, and 19th-century German illustrated travel publications. Its elegant monochrome palette and balanced composition also make it highly decorative for interior display. Condition: Very good condition overall, with mild age toning and occasional minor spotting in the margins consistent with age. Strong impression with full margins preserved. Framing tips: This engraving displays beautifully in dark walnut, black lacquer, or lightly gilt frames paired with wide ivory or oatmeal mats. Its refined monochrome appearance and historical cityscape composition make it especially suitable for libraries, studies, New York interiors, or sophisticated gallery walls. Special note: This is an original antique print, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The print is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale with the original.
