The composition reflects the grandeur and refinement associated with noble Roman society during the Renaissance. Produced circa 1749 by the European School, the engraving belongs to the celebrated tradition of European costume studies that documented the dress and customs of historical periods and foreign nations. Such works became highly fashionable during the Enlightenment era and were collected for both their ethnographic interest and decorative sophistication. The original hand-coloring remains especially attractive here, with soft tones of lavender, ochre, rose, grey, and muted green lending the figure a refined and highly decorative appearance. The costume itself reflects the influence of Italian Renaissance court culture, characterized by luxurious fabrics, slashed sleeves, fitted garments, and ornamental detailing. The nobleman’s dignified pose and richly layered attire convey both social status and martial elegance, while the restrained composition gives the print a remarkably modern visual balance. The generous blank margins surrounding the figure further enhance the engraving’s refined presentation and decorative appeal. This engraving works beautifully as a standalone piece and also pairs well with other Renaissance or Italian costume engravings from the same series. Its soft coloration and elegant proportions make it particularly suitable for libraries, studies, dressing rooms, or sophisticated classical interiors. Condition: Good condition overall with age-related toning, occasional scattered spotting, and light edge wear consistent with age. Wide margins preserved. Original hand-coloring remains fresh and attractive. Framing tips: Particularly effective in a dark walnut, ebonized, or muted gilt frame with a wide ivory mat. A thin gilt fillet would further enhance the Renaissance courtly character of the composition. Note: This print is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The piece is sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
