The engravings, titled “Lady of Quality of Venice,” “Habit of a Noble Matron of Venice, 1581,” and “Habit of a Noble Matron of Venice, 1581,” belong to a celebrated mid-18th century European costume series documenting the ceremonial attire and refined elegance of historic European courts and cities. Executed circa 1749 by the European School, these engravings reflect the Enlightenment fascination with historical costume, aristocratic culture, and the visual traditions of Europe’s great republics and kingdoms. Venice, famed for its wealth, diplomacy, masquerades, and luxurious textiles, provided especially captivating subject matter for artists and collectors alike. Each figure is shown individually against a minimalist background, allowing full attention to fall upon the extraordinary garments, jewelry, lace collars, silk veils, and decorative fabrics. The compositions possess a graceful theatricality, emphasizing both the dignity and sophistication associated with Venetian society during the late Renaissance period. The first engraving portrays a refined Venetian lady wearing an elaborate pleated collar and richly ornamented turquoise gown. The second presents a noble matron holding a ceremonial fan beneath a flowing translucent veil, while the third features a noblewoman dressed in deep blue silk with elegant jewelry and feathered accessories. Together, the three prints create a harmonious decorative ensemble unified by their Venetian subject matter and subtle original hand-coloring. These engravings display beautifully as a grouped collection and are particularly suitable for interiors inspired by classical European elegance, Italianate decoration, fashion history, or Grand Tour aesthetics. Their restrained compositions and generous margins also give them a refined modern appeal despite their 18th-century origin. Condition: Good condition overall with age-related toning, occasional scattered foxing, and minor edge wear consistent with age. Wide margins preserved. Original hand-coloring remains soft and attractive. Framing tips: Particularly attractive framed together in matching dark walnut, ebonized, or muted gilt frames with wide ivory mats. The varied pastel tones work exceptionally well as a coordinated gallery arrangement. Note: These prints are original antique engravings, not reproductions. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The pieces are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale.
