Published in 1749 as part of an important European costume series, these elegant engravings document historical Italian dress traditions with remarkable decorative sophistication and period charm. The first engraving, “Habit of a Lady of Padua,” portrays an aristocratic woman dressed in richly layered garments with delicate lace, jewelry, and an elaborate veil. The figure holds a small hand mirror, emphasizing themes of elegance, refinement, and courtly fashion associated with Padua during the Renaissance era. The soft grey drapery contrasted with pink and blue accents creates an exceptionally graceful composition. The second plate, “Habit of a Lady of Quality of Sienna, in 1581,” depicts a noble Sienese lady in flowing golden robes with elongated drapery and restrained elegance characteristic of late Renaissance Italian costume. The subtle posture, long train, and understated palette lend the engraving a distinctly sophisticated and almost portrait-like appearance. Together, these engravings form an especially attractive decorative pair. Both figures are presented against minimal backgrounds, allowing the elaborate costumes and delicate hand-coloring to dominate the compositions. The visual balance between the cooler tones of the Padua engraving and the warm golden palette of the Siena plate makes them highly suitable for symmetrical display in refined interiors. These costume engravings also reflect the 18th-century European fascination with regional dress, historical customs, and aristocratic identity. Such works were collected by travelers, scholars, and Grand Tour audiences seeking visual records of European cultures and historical fashion traditions. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning, occasional foxing, and minor edge wear. Visible platemarks and original hand-coloring. Minor marginal imperfections consistent with age. Framing tips: These engravings display beautifully framed together in matching dark walnut, ebonized, or lightly gilt frames with wide ivory mats. Their vertical compositions lend themselves particularly well to elegant side-by-side or stacked museum-style presentation. This is an original antique document, not a reproduction.
