The steel base is not rusty, but does exhibit a patina. I have not attempted to remove more than the dirt and dust. - The lamp shades are original, and they do have staining from time. I have not attempted to wash them. They do not smell, and the plastic liners are not cracked or burnt. They present well, I think. Photos are accurate.
