Item Description
This museum-quality mid-20th-century oil painting on board is an authenticated, titled masterpiece by the celebrated émigré artist Grigory Gluckmann (1898–1973). The composition features a masterfully modeled reclining female nude, rendered in soft, glowing flesh tones that contrast elegantly against a rich, moody background. Gluckmann employs his legendary multi-layered panel technique, utilizing subtle, visible brushwork that builds form through translucent layers of texture and light, giving the figure an ethereal, jewel-like glow.
The painting remains in its exceptional gallery-housed condition, complete with an incredible wealth of original historical labels intact on the reverse. The backing retains its original gallery label from the prestigious Dalzell Hatfield Galleries (Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles), an archival biographical clipping, and a secondary gallery label from the renowned George Stern Fine Arts (West Hollywood, CA).
The painting is presented in its magnificent, highly ornate antique gold-gilt wood frame, decorated with deep, intricate geometric scrollwork and stylized floral corner rosettes. This luxurious frame creates a dramatic, deep-set shadow-box effect that perfectly accents the painting's proportions.

Artist Biography & Provenance History
Grigory Gluckmann (1898–1973) was a highly acclaimed émigré painter renowned for his sensuous nudes, elegant portraits, and atmospheric scenes of urban nightlife. Born in Vitebsk, Russia, Gluckmann began his formal training at the prestigious Moscow Academy of Fine Arts. To escape the turmoil of the Russian Revolution, he fled to Europe, establishing himself first in Florence and later in Paris during the roaring 1920s.
In Paris, Gluckmann’s signature style matured. Eschewing the raw abstraction of his avant-garde contemporaries, he looked back to the Venetian Old Masters, developing a laborious glazing technique on wood panels. By applying thin, transparent layers of oil paint over a bright underpainting, his figures achieved a distinct, luminous translucency that seemed to glow from within. His solo exhibitions at the Galerie Charpentier met with immense critical acclaim, and the French government purchased his work for state collections.
With the outbreak of World War II, Gluckmann immigrated to the United States, settling first in New York and eventually making his home in Los Angeles. Upon arriving in Southern California, he was immediately taken on by the legendary Dalzell Hatfield Galleries, operating out of the luxury Ambassador Hotel. Dalzell Hatfield was the premier tastemaker of mid-century Los Angeles, introducing elite Hollywood figures and major West Coast institutions to masterworks of European and American art. Gluckmann's association with Hatfield cemented his status among top-tier American collectors. Today, his masterpieces are held in premier international public institutions, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the San Diego Museum of Art
Grigory Gluckmann’s style is best classified as a unique blend of Classical Realism and French Modernism (specifically Post-Impressionism). He did not cleanly fit into a single textbook movement like strict Impressionism or Expressionism.
Art historians and curators characterize his work using specific stylistic definitions:
Why He is Not an Expressionist
Expressionism focuses on distortion, jarring colors, and raw, exaggerated emotional states. Gluckmann completely rejected the chaotic abstraction and harshness of his avant-garde contemporaries. His work is peaceful, harmonious, and highly controlled.
His Connection to Impressionism
While he is sometimes broadly categorized under the umbrella of "Impressionist & Modern" by auction houses like MutualArt due to his use of light, he didn't paint outdoors (en plein air) to catch fleeting daylight like classic Impressionists. Instead, his soft textures, rich palettes, and dreamlike female forms draw stylistic comparisons to the glowing color choices of Pierre-Auguste Renoir and the soft moodiness of Degas.
The Core Elements of His Real Style
Italian Renaissance / Old Master Techniques: After leaving Russia, Gluckmann spent a year studying Renaissance masters in Italy. He adopted a highly classical glazing technique where he built up countless thin, overlapping layers of transparent oil paint on rigid wood panels.
Venetian Luminosity: This method creates a distinct "jewel-like" or "chameleon" transparency. It makes the skin of his nudes appear to catch light and glow warmly from within against rich, dark backgrounds.
Sensuous Figurative Realism: His main signature is the anatomical softness and elegant modeling of the human figure, heavily influenced by classical forms like those of Peter Paul Rubens or Giorgione.
