Antique American Britannia Teapot by R. Gleason, Dorchester, MA, circa 1840s
A handsome antique American teapot in Britannia metal by Roswell Gleason of Dorchester, Massachusetts — one of the most respected names in 19th-century American pewter. The globular, banded body sits on a stepped pedestal foot with a domed, ringed lid and an elegant scrolled black-painted handle. Marked R. GLEASON to the base.
Roswell Gleason (1799–1887) operated his Dorchester manufactory from 1818 to 1871, producing some of the finest Britannia ware made in America. His pieces are well-documented and actively collected. Britannia metal — a refined, lead-free alloy closely related to pewter — was the premium material of its era, prized for its bright, smooth finish and durability.
Presented in honest, as-found condition with a wonderful aged patina. A distinguished piece of American decorative arts history.
