In the 1950s and 1960s, when the great tourist boom swept across Mexico, the artisans capitalized on this phenomenon by recreating ancient ceremonial Aztec and Mayan warrior masks for collectors to bring home with them. This is a VERY large example of one of those mid-century folk art sculptures.
