This elegant vintage sculpture of a deer showcases the beauty of the traditional metal casting technique called Dhokra lost wax casting. It has been practiced in tribal regions of Indian, such as Bastar, Odisha and West Bengal, for more than 4,000 years. In these areas the deer is linked to stories and traditions of nature, grace and spirituality.
The distinctive hollowed, mesh like look and other patterns of the deer's body are made by wrapping fine wax threads around a clay core before casting the molten brass. The clay core is then smashed to finishing the process that makes each piece unique.
The sculpture stands approximately 6.5 inches high, by 4.5 inches wide.
