A captivating mid-19th century oil on canvas portrait of a young child, rendered with the sensitivity and technical skill characteristic of academic portraiture from the 1840s–1860s. The subject — a small child with short dark hair and soulful eyes — stands in a three-quarter pose wearing a white off-shoulder dress with a red sash, holding a wicker basket. A atmospheric landscape of trees and sky fills the background, painted with soft, luminous tones.
The composition is presented within a painted oval format, a hallmark of formal portraiture of the period. The original gilt frame is a showpiece in its own right, featuring four elaborately cast foliate and floral corner appliqués with rococo scrollwork — striking in both scale and craftsmanship.
An inscription on the verso reads “JAMAR / March 1966,” likely referencing a conservator or former owner. The canvas shows evidence of professional relining, consistent with responsible long-term preservation of a work of this age.
Artist unknown. A wonderful example of American or European parlor portraiture, ready to anchor a traditional, eclectic, or maximalist interior.
