Produced by Rosenthal as an officially licensed reproduction of Warhol’s artwork, this numbered edition (15/49) uses silkscreen enamel on porcelain. Warhol’s Cow series began in the 1960s after art dealer Ivan Karp suggested that he explore pastoral subjects. Working with an image selected with the help of his associate Gerard Malanga, Warhol turned the cow into a recurring motif, presenting it in vivid colour combinations that departed from conventional representations of the animal. The imagery was famously used as wallpaper in his 1966 exhibition at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. By elevating an everyday farm animal into a repeated Pop Art image, Warhol played with the boundaries between popular culture, humour, and fine art.
