This porcelain self-portrait depicts Andy Warhol through the simplified forms and strong graphic contrasts characteristic of his portrait practice. Produced by Rosenthal as an officially licensed reproduction of Warhol’s artwork, this numbered edition (16/49) uses silkscreen enamel on porcelain. Black and blue define the composition, emphasising the graphic treatment of the artist’s own image.
Warhol returned to self-portraiture throughout his career, treating his own appearance with the same interest in photography, repetition, and public image that informed his portraits of celebrities. His self-portraits blur the distinction between the artist as an individual and the carefully constructed persona presented to the public. Drawing on the visual language of publicity photography, these works reflect a culture in which identity is increasingly encountered through reproduced images. Here, Warhol becomes both the subject of the portrait and an image circulating within the visual culture he helped redefine.
