Produced by Rosenthal as an officially licensed reproduction of Warhol’s artwork, this numbered edition (15/49) uses silkscreen enamel to render the actress’s image on porcelain. Hot pink, red, turquoise, and yellow create contrasting colour fields that emphasise the graphic structure of the portrait.

Warhol began his celebrated series of Marilyn portraits in 1962, following the actress’s death that August. Based on a publicity photograph, the image was reworked through contrasting colour combinations, with each variation changing the character of the familiar face. The series became a defining example of Warhol’s approach to Pop Art, in which celebrity photographs were treated as images already shaped by publicity and repetition. Monroe’s portrait captures his interest in the relationship between a public persona and the mass-produced images through which it is recognised.
