Its striking dark patina adds to its allure. This piece is a prime example of Benin royal art, created to honor the divine ancestry of the great kings, or OBAs. Each casting is one-of-a-kind, crafted by skilled brass casters using the lost wax technique. This process involves covering a wax core with clay and then carving it into the desired shape, resulting in unique and intricate pieces. This tradition, dating back to the 15th or 16th century, has long been reserved for the monarchy, with rare exceptions for chiefs. See less
