Layers … Read more Reminiscent of Limoges porcelain tile paintings, this beautifully detailed river scene deposits the viewer straight onto a quaint riverbed. Layers of oil paint sculpt the peaceful scene of a fisherman on his dock, with sailboats and vestiges of a fort or castle on the distance shore.

The tile is surrounded by lovely green velvet within a wood frame. Signed "E.Buffet" at the lower left. Remnants of a label on reverse.

Painting on porcelain tile is an uncommon medium, perhaps in some ways more difficult or unforgiving. The lack of absorption of paint gives this style a transcendent quality. The clarity of colors and smoothness lend an almost dream-like quality to the scene. Layers allow for depth both physically and visually, bringing the water and river bank to glistening life.
