Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 6. Kindness of heart is a virtue that costs dear, as Daumier learnt from sad experience. This famous picture testifies to his compassion for the lot of the unprivileged. Here the bitterness of the caricaturist has given place to a resignation none the less keenly perceptive. There is something of the grandeur of a fresco in this striking composition and the drawing, especially that of the three figures in the foreground, has a precision equaling that of the greatest masters. For with the precise astringency of a Degas he happily combines a fluency of line and gentleness of treatment ruling out any suggestion of misanthropy. See less
