Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 1. Excellent condition - never framed.

Here Daumier employs the thick contour lines characteristic of the cartoonist, which the next generation, beginning with Manet, was to take over from him (likewise from the woodcut and Japanese prints) and which reached their culmination in Gauguin’s ‘Cloisonnism.’ But Daumier does not merely insert flat color within the contours of the drawing; he puts his color on in broad, powerful brushstrokes. Here, too, he adds passages of that rustic scenery which Millet, after him, was to turn to such good account. See less
