Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 6. Excellent condition - never framed.

Manet has defined the planes and modeling of the poet’s face with fluent brushstrokes and in a very personal range of colors. The light falls on the sitter from in front; a bold procedure often followed by Velazquez, who liked to have his models bathed in light. The shadows setting off the high-lights are in half-tones which, while lacking the emphasis of the direct contrasts favored by inferior painters, fully equal them in intensity. This is due to the artist’s skill in handling the “tone-upon-tone” technique. Moreover (as is usual in Manet’s pictures), we are given a notable “bravura piece”: the poet’s hand, a cigar between two fingers, resting on the book. See less
