Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 3. Excellent condition - never framed.

The youth in the foreground is none other than Léon Édouard Koëlla-Leenhoff, son of Manet and Suzanne Leenhoff. Born before their marriage, he passed throughout his life for Mme Manet’s young brother. In the year when this canvas was painted, 1868, Impressionism was coming to the fore, and Manet may well have wished to show his independence of the new aesthetic when he gave his leading personage a black coat -- black being banned from the impressionist palette. Here the figures are “drawn with the brush” with wonderful virtuosity, without stylization or distortions; indeed the sureness of the brushwork and the artist’s grip of his subject show Manet at his incomparable best.
