Comes from a rare First Edition folio of the artist published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1950s. Printed on one side. Numbered at the lower right corner: 2. Excellent condition - never framed.

This, one of Manet’s most famous pictures, roused a storm of protests when shown at the epoch-making Salon Des Refuses (1863), which brought together many artists rejected by the official Salon: amongst them, Pissarro, Jongkind, Fantin-Latour, Whistler and Cezanne. The Emperor, Napoleon III, pronounced this picture “immodest.” The official critics completely failed to notice that it was a re-interpretation of Raphael’s Judgement of Paris, and that a very similar theme had inspired Titian and Giorgione to works that, in their time, had not shocked anybody.
