Martine Bedin’s Charleston floor lamp boasts remarkable sculptural qualities, expressed through its creative geometry, enhanced by the vibrant blue colour and the dynamism – evoked by the name, which refers to the dance – achieved through the combination of circular elements and straight lines. The long black tube, which supports the diffuser, rotates 360°: a functional system that nevertheless allows the light to be directed in a playful manner by turning the ‘hand’.
Martine Bedin is a designer, artist, architect and lecturer. She studied Architecture at the Ecole d’architecture in Paris. In 1978, she received a scholarship that took her to Florence, where she met members of the Radical Architecture movement: the founders of Alchimia, Superstudio and Archizoom Associati. The founder of Superstudio, Adolfo Natalini, invited her to exhibit “la casa decorata” at the Milan Triennale in 1979, where she met Michele De Lucchi and Ettore Sottsass. In the early 1980s, she spent two years at Sottsass’s studio, whilst also working on her own projects and writing for a French design and architecture magazine. In 1981, Sottsass invited her to collaborate with Memphis. Bedin works with various materials, such as marble, wood, metal and ceramics. Alongside her work as a designer, she also teaches at university. Since 1991, she has focused exclusively on creating unique pieces of furniture.
In 1993, she was awarded the ‘Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’. Her work is exhibited in major museums and private collections I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
