A remarkable and rare 19th-century double-sided lithographic limestone plate. This large "mother plate" is an artifact of medical and industrial history, featuring highly detailed anatomical illustrations on both the front and back.
The primary side depicts a detailed study of the human nervous system, while the reverse features a striking yellow background with further anatomical figures focusing on the skeletal and muscular structures. Both sides showcase intricate, fine-line detail.
The illustrations are stylistically influenced by the classical anatomical traditions of Andreas Vesalius. This piece is a substantial work of scientific art, showcasing hand-cut, rough edges and the beautiful natural patina of 19th-century industrial use.

It remains structurally sound with high image clarity on both sides. Minor surface staining and localized discoloration are present, particularly near the edges. The black lithographic ink is well-preserved. There is some minor "ghosting" or fading consistent with age, but the fine-line detail of the nerve branches remains crisp. This secondary side has noticeable pigment loss. Both faces are level and smooth to the touch, indicating the stone was well-maintained for press use. Structural Integrity is sound. The edges are rough-hewn and hand-cut, which is the standard for authentic 19th-century stones. Small, stable chips are present along the perimeter, none of which threaten the stability of the slab. No structural cracks or deep fissures are visible. The stone appears dense and solid. The stone maintains a consistent thickness, providing the necessary weight for a secure upright display. All items are in vintage or pre-owned condition and show wear consistent with age and use, unless otherwise noted in the listing. Any significant condition details will be described and/or photographed; however, the absence of a specific mention does not imply the item is free from imperfections. We encourage buyers to review all photos carefully and reach out with any questions prior to purchase. Additional photos or details are available upon request. less
